skip to content mwiings self published zambian author menu rambling look, a story! rhymes are optional subscribe contact about me scroll down to content posts posted on 31st july 2018 31st july 2018 #levelup so… not long ago i found out the editor i used for my book had died. she was only 38 and her heart gave out. she’s not the reason i haven’t posted in so long but her death made me question some things. i’m 33 and technically have a heart condition. it’s not severe but it’s something i now know exists and freaks me out from time to time because my favourite game to play is “what’s the worst thing that could happen?” and actually follow through on imagining the worst that could happen. i could die today, tomorrow or i could live till i’m 111. i control nothing really in preventing that from happening (sure, living a healthy lifestyle and not taking reckless risks helps but accidents still happen). then i heard ciara’s #levelup song and i thought… that’s short but catchy and sometimes i’d hear myself humming it. i even thought i’d try learn the choreography (i really cannot dance. at all. the only musical talent i have is my ability to appreciate it). then i saw the following videos on her instagram page: https://mwiings.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/07/ciara_video_1532426283404.mp4 https://mwiings.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/07/ciara_video_1532426318571.mp4 https://mwiings.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/07/ciara_video_1532426253620.mp4 and i had to be honest with myself. i haven’t been leveling up at all . i’ve been going through the motions and been stuck in the foul odour of my own mediocrity and i cannot stand it any longer. the ways i’m choosing to level up are: 1) produce more creative content . i still fear the idea of calling myself a writer or telling people that i ‘have a book’ but i’m working on that and once i give it this last pass and republish, it’s onto the next project. also entering atleast one writing competition before the end of the year. if i do not allow myself to be the creative person i imagine i am, i only make myself miserable. 2) be present . because of the above mentioned game, too often i focus on the consequences of a moment rather than revel in it. i need to know something’s purpose or reason and if this isn’t immediately available i find myself giving reasons or justifications even if they are wrong (it occurs to me that i may not necessarily be a pleasant person to be around). this will be hard for me, i itch for ‘why?’ and ‘what next?’. there’s a joy in living in the now that my brain hasn’t deciphered yet so i need to figure out what that means to me and not overthink every single thing. i kid u not, i obsess on the most useless of consequences it’s ridiculous. 3) feed my pleasures . i thought my last one would be to lose weight or get more healthy or some such but to be honest i just want to be happy. life is short and i want to remember happy things when my life flashes before my eyes. some of that happiness will come from food, some will come from gorging on stories and others on being around people i love and actually care for even though i’m terrible at telling them i do. could i lose some weight? of course but i think losing some mental baggage would be a better levelling up than a physical one for me. there are physical pursuits that make me happy but i can’t really go into them here… but i will say sorting my head out makes it more likely that whatever physical goal i set will be successful. i believe in that. and my abundant laziness. i need to shift some things around on this site as well so this place continues to feed my pleasures as well as yours so working on that too. thanks for still being here. here’s a lil dance to say thank you! https://mwiings.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/07/theoneilltwins_video_1532426363536.mp4 how are you going to #levelup? o&o. related posts: children of blood and bone posted on 16th april 2018 16th april 2018 children of blood and bone so… how gorgeous is that cover? i haven’t yet read this gem but i haven’t been this excited to get my hands on a book in a while. i read the free sample off my kindle and what i read so far makes me want to have a daughter so that i can share this book with her under the weak light of a bedside lamp as we snuggle under her covers, safe but surrounded by the unfamiliar darkness beyond our island of light. since i don’t have a daughter or a bedside lamp that throws light quite the way i imagine… i just have to tell you… read this book. and then share it. #cbb o&o related posts: thank you for visiting! posted on 22nd january 2018 do better so… recently someone told me about a video going around of some guy who had a ‘child’ in the car with him as his glistening member was visible to the camera. turns out it’s a 46 year old man who had a 15 year old girl in his car with him and the person who ‘caught’ them filmed it (not the act but the pair of them). it’s bad enough that we have men taking advantage of women that see their abusive relationships as the only options they have but this person filming didn’t bother to protect the identity of the girl and the version of the video circulating also has her identity known. we should do better by victims of any crimes but even more so vulnerable underage victims. there’s a particular section of society that believes the 15 year old girl ‘knew what she was doing’. this girl is an orphan and the 46 year old man promised to pay her exam fees if she put out. but, because she had beads around her waist she’s definitely an adult and we must slut shame her. do we have 15 year olds that are ready to have sex? in that case opinion requires some defence.’ so i went off to read up about him to make sense of what he was trying to say. note: i’m only addressing the merits of his arguements because i do not know about his personal situation and can’t intellectually engage that so…here’s the post: here were my main takeaway points from this ‘nugget of wisdom’ above. 1) zambian men are focused on marrying only zambian women. 2) zambian women are (all) physically attractive but mentally unfit. 3) 95% of zambian women have no drive, ambition, purpose or ‘grind’. 4) (all) zambian men are fighting for the ‘sane 5%’. 5) in order for a zambian man to get ‘bigger, better things’, he must leave behind zambian women and marry ‘from outside’. you may have others but these 5 ‘statements’ are what i’d like to understand. 1) i’m going to tackle this with a horrible metaphor: if a blue fish lives in a green pond with black rocks, said fish will think all ponds are green and all rocks are blue (or they live in the only pond in the world). now, let’s say this fish gets caught by an industrious little girl, who places this lucky fish in an aquarium perched on her bedroom window on the second storey of her house. from his view, he can see white rocks lining the driveway below h
